The Super Falcons of Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by the Amazons of Benin Republic in the second leg of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, today.
Plumptri Ashleigh scored early for the Super Falcons, finding the back of the net in the 12th minute. However, Benin Republic's Yasminath Djibril equalized in the 61st minute, securing a crucial away goal for the visitors.
The match was a thrilling encounter, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination. Despite the draw, Nigeria's 2-0 win in the first leg, courtesy of goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo, ensures they have a strong advantage heading into the next round.
Speaking after the match, Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu praised his team's performance, acknowledging the toughness of the encounter. "We expected a tough match from the Beninoise, and they delivered," Madugu said. "Despite the draw, we're satisfied with the overall performance and look forward to the next challenge."
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was present at the stadium, commended the Super Falcons for their inspiring performance and announced a ₦50 million cash gift to the team as motivation.
The Super Falcons' next assignment is yet to be announced, but their qualification for the 2026 WAFCON is now a formality, given their aggregate lead over Benin Republic.
