Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Abdul‑Rasheed Na’Allah, has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to convene a national dialogue aimed at resolving the enduring security crisis across the country.
Speaking during a public lecture in Ilorin titled “Religious Harmony, Cultural Preservation and Community Service: The Significance of Ilorin Emirate Pulpit"-Professor Na’Allah proposed that authorities carry out a comprehensive census of both city dwellers and those in rural or forested areas to better enhance safety and security nationwide.
He also called for the adoption of a community-based “Ilorin-style” neighbourhood watch, arguing that such grassroots engagement could help foster peaceful coexistence throughout Nigeria.
According to him, the blend of Islamic education and cultural diversity in the Ilorin Emirate has shaped citizens into responsible individuals contributing to the Emirate’s relative peace. He believes those values could serve as a model for the rest of the country.
Meanwhile, dignitaries at the event including representatives of the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led Kwara State government and the book’s author celebrated the contributions of the Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Imam Solih, the Chief Imam of Ilorin, whose sermons and community efforts have been credited with promoting inter-religious harmony and peace.
In all, the call for a national conversation on insecurity underscores growing urgency and suggests a bottom-up approach combining census, community vigilance, and cultural values as a potential path toward restoring stability.
