Pope Leo Condemns Benue Massacre, Offers Prayers for Peace in Nigeria
Pope Leo XIV has condemned the recent m@ssacre of about 200 people in Benue State, Nigeria, and offered prayers for peace, justice, and security in the region.
In a message posted on the Vatican News X handle, the Pope described the killings carried out by suspected armed herdsmen in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area as a “terrible m@ssacre,” noting that many of the victims were internally displaced persons taking refuge at a local Catholic mission.
Speaking before the Sunday Angelus prayer, the Pope expressed deep concern for the Christian rural communities in Benue, who he said have been persistent targets of v+olence.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International Nigeria has urged the Nigerian government to act swiftly to stop the ongoing bloodshed and ensure the perpetrators of the Benue killings are brought to justice.
