 Nigerian Army Denies Reports of Bandits Overrunning Troops in Kwara

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports that bandits overran its troops and made away with weapons and ammunition in Babanla, Ifelodun LGA of Kwara State. According to the Army, the claims are false and misleading, and were designed to undermine the morale of gallant troops working to restore peace and stability in the region.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Okoye, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Division, described the report as a fabrication aimed at misinforming the public. "At no time were Army positions overrun, nor was any cache of weapons or ammunition lost to criminal elements," he said.

The Army spokesperson highlighted the successes recorded by troops of 148 Battalion (Rear) conducting clearance operations across Kogi and Kwara States. "In a recent engagement, the troops mounted a strong blocking position along the Kwara–Ekiti border axis, where they neutralized two armed bandits and recovered two brand-new AK-47 rifles," Okoye said.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining its operations until all criminal networks operating in Kogi, Kwara, and neighboring states are dismantled. "The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring that all forms of criminality are decisively dealt with across the country," Okoye added.

Kwara State has witnessed a series of deadly bandit attacks in recent weeks, with several communities experiencing a surge in banditry, terrorist attacks, and killings. The violence has triggered fear among the populace, with many residents fleeing their homes in panic.

The Nigerian Army's denial of the reports is a testament to its commitment to transparency and accountability.
