NSCDC Arrests 3 Over Alleged Illegal Sand Mining In Anambra

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested three suspects over alleged illegal mining of sharp sand at Obiaja River in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at about 2:07 p.m. during a raid conducted by the NSCDC Mines and Steel Development Unit in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer in Anambra State under the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.

The operation, which followed credible intelligence, was carried out at Mmiri Obiaja, popularly known as Mmiri Mgbo Obiaja Nnobi, along the Nnobi–Ideani Junction–Uke Road.

The three suspects were identified as Patrick Anpue, 45; Chidubem Ugammadu, 44; and Chukwuma Igwe, 47. According to the NSCDC, they were allegedly carrying out sand-mining activities without the required authorisation or legal documentation.

Authorities recovered two tippers, six shovels and a wheelbarrow allegedly used for the excavation. The NSCDC said the suspects admitted to carrying out the mining activities without the necessary approval.

State Commandant Maku Olatunde said the arrests were part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb unregulated mining and protect the state’s mineral resources from exploitation by unlicensed operators.

He warned individuals and groups involved in illegal sand mining to desist or face the consequences of the law, while urging members of the public to report suspected illegal mining activities.

The NSCDC said investigation into the matter is ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court after the investigation is concluded.
