Tinubu Hails Adeleke’s Victory, Says It Affirms Nigeria’s Democratic Strength

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, describing the outcome of the August 15 governorship election as a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in Nigeria.

Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday after securing 511,067 votes across 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas. His closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, polled 444,815 votes and won in the remaining 11 local government areas.

Reacting to the result, President Tinubu said he had personally called Adeleke to congratulate him on his victory, adding that the outcome confirmed the confidence the people of Osun State have placed in the governor.

Tinubu also wished Adeleke success as he prepares to serve another four-year term, while urging him to use the renewed mandate to unite the people of Osun State irrespective of their political affiliations or choices during the election.

The President said the governor should rally the people around the goals of growth, stability and social and economic development as he begins his second term.

Beyond congratulating the winner, Tinubu commended the other contestants for what he described as courage and discipline throughout the electoral process. He noted that their participation contributed to Nigeria’s democratic culture.

According to the President, the outcome of the election reflects the will of the people and demonstrates that Nigeria’s democratic process remains capable of producing a clear electoral mandate.

Tinubu also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies for what he described as a peaceful and transparent election that produced a clear winner.

The President’s reaction is particularly notable given that Adeleke’s victory came against the APC candidate in a state where the contest had attracted significant political attention ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The result also gives Adeleke a renewed mandate to continue governing Osun State for another four years after his initial election as governor in 2022. His 2026 victory came under the Accord Party, with the governor securing a decisive lead over Oyebamiji in the final results announced by INEC.

For the people of Osun, the immediate challenge now shifts from the electoral contest to governance, as Adeleke begins preparations for another term in office.

President Tinubu has consequently urged the governor to put the election behind him and focus on bringing the people together while pursuing policies capable of promoting stability, economic progress and development across the state.

The President’s statement further places emphasis on the peaceful acceptance of electoral outcomes as an important component of Nigeria’s democratic development, particularly as the country approaches another major electoral cycle in 2027.
