A viral report claiming that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has introduced an online platform that allows Nigerians to report crimes without physically visiting a police station has gained widespread attention on social media.
The report suggests that members of the public can use the online service to report various incidents, including theft, kidnapping, assault, fraud, domestic violence, missing persons and other criminal offences.
However, while the claim has some basis, further clarification is necessary to properly understand the services currently available.
The official Nigeria Police Force website features a “Report a Crime” service, indicating that members of the public can access an online channel for submitting crime-related reports. This means that the idea of reporting a crime to the police through an online platform is not entirely new or false.
In addition, the Nigeria Police Force operates a dedicated National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) E-Reporting Portal. The platform is specifically designed to enable Nigerians to report cybercrime and other offences committed through digital platforms, providing an alternative to physically visiting a police station for such cases.
The distinction is important because the existence of an online reporting service does not necessarily mean that every category of crime can be completely handled online or that Nigerians will never need to visit a police station.
For serious or ongoing emergencies, such as an active attack, kidnapping situation or immediate threat to life, members of the public should contact the appropriate emergency police channels and seek immediate assistance rather than relying solely on an online form.
Online reporting can, however, make it easier for citizens to bring incidents to the attention of law enforcement, particularly in situations where visiting a police station immediately may be difficult. It also reflects the increasing use of digital platforms by law enforcement agencies to improve accessibility and communication with the public.
Therefore, the viral claim should not simply be described as fake. Nigerians do have access to official online police reporting services, particularly for cybercrime, while the broader “report any crime without going to a station” interpretation requires caution.
Members of the public are advised to ensure that they use only official Nigeria Police Force platforms when submitting sensitive information or reporting criminal incidents online, and to avoid unverified links circulating on social media.
