Four suspected bandits have been killed and 35 stolen cows recovered following a joint security operation in Lade, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The operation followed intelligence that armed men had invaded a cattle camp in the area on September 11, 2026, and allegedly rustled about 40 cows.
Acting on the information, personnel of the Kwara State Police Command, Nigerian Army, Forest Guards and local vigilantes reportedly mobilised and pursued the suspects into a nearby forest.
The pursuit later resulted in an exchange of gunfire between the security operatives and the suspected bandits.
Four of the suspects were reportedly killed during the operation, while others managed to escape, some of them believed to have sustained gunshot injuries.
Security personnel recovered 35 of the stolen cows as well as a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle from the operation.
Efforts are reportedly ongoing to track the fleeing suspects and recover the remaining livestock.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, commended the participating security agencies and local vigilantes for their cooperation and coordinated response.
The operation highlights the importance of timely intelligence and collaboration among security agencies and local communities in responding to cattle rustling and other security threats in rural areas.
Authorities are expected to continue efforts to locate the remaining suspects and ensure that the recovered livestock are returned to their rightful owners.
