MOB National Taekwondo Championship Begins in Lagos, Draws Athletes From Across Nigeria

The inaugural Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB) National Taekwondo Championship has begun at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, bringing together athletes from across Nigeria for one of the country’s latest major national taekwondo competitions.

Organised by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), the championship has attracted representatives from states across the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside athletes from clubs and para-military formations.

The competition, which is being sponsored by Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, is designed to provide a national platform for athletes to compete, develop their abilities and potentially attract the attention of selectors ahead of future international assignments.

The federation has described the championship as an important addition to its efforts to strengthen taekwondo development in Nigeria. NTF President Tayo Popoola said the event is also expected to contribute to the federation’s preparations for future international competitions, including the African Games and Olympic Games.

Beyond the battle for medals, the championship provides an opportunity for emerging athletes to gain valuable competitive experience at national level. The event is also expected to give the federation a closer look at athletes who could feature in Nigeria’s future international teams.

Senator Bamidele, who is sponsoring the competition, has described sports as an avenue for youth engagement and talent development. He said the emergence of new talents across different sports remains important, particularly in creating positive opportunities for young people to build careers around their abilities.

Federation Promises International Standards

The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has placed particular emphasis on the technical preparation for the maiden championship.

Ahead of the competition, the federation organised training for officials responsible for handling the technical aspects of the event. According to the NTF, the exercise was aimed at ensuring that the championship is conducted in line with international standards and established best practices.

The federation has also confirmed that new equipment will be used during the competition. Popoola said the organisers were determined to provide athletes with facilities and equipment that meet global standards, describing the preparations as part of efforts to deliver a properly organised championship.

The availability of new equipment is expected to provide athletes with a better competitive environment while also helping the federation maintain the technical standards required for major national competitions.

Nationwide Participation

Participation in the maiden championship extends beyond state teams, with clubs and para-military organisations also expected to compete.

The broad participation reflects the federation’s effort to create a competition that brings together athletes from different parts of the country and different taekwondo structures.

The NTF had also kept registration open ahead of the event, saying the response from states and clubs had been encouraging.

The competition is therefore expected to provide a mixture of experienced athletes and emerging talents, giving younger competitors the opportunity to test themselves against athletes with greater experience at national level.

More Than a Competition

For the organisers, the MOB National Taekwondo Championship is also about strengthening the pathway for athletes who could eventually represent Nigeria internationally.

By bringing athletes together in a competitive national setting, the championship gives coaches and federation officials an opportunity to observe performances, identify promising competitors and assess the depth of talent available across the country.

The event also comes at a time when the NTF is looking towards future continental and global competitions and seeking to improve Nigeria’s preparation for international engagements.

With the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium serving as the venue, the maiden MOB Championship is expected to combine national competition with talent discovery and further development of taekwondo in Nigeria.

The competition continues in Lagos as athletes compete for honours and an opportunity to make their mark at one of the country's newest national taekwondo events.
