Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance, regional peace and stability in the Gulf of Guinea as the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, represents President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of São Tomé and PrÃncipe’s President, Carlos Manuel Vila Nova.
Matawalle is in São Tomé and PrÃncipe on behalf of President Tinubu for the ceremony marking Vila Nova’s commencement of a second five-year term in office. His representation highlights the importance Nigeria attaches to its diplomatic relationship with the island nation and its broader engagement with countries in the Gulf of Guinea.
Vila Nova secured re-election in the country’s July 19, 2026 presidential election, paving the way for his second term. His inauguration provides an opportunity for Nigeria to reaffirm its support for democratic institutions and peaceful political transitions within the region.
During Matawalle’s visit, areas of mutual interest are expected to remain central to Nigeria’s engagement with São Tomé and PrÃncipe. These include defence cooperation, regional security, economic relations and maritime security, particularly given the strategic importance of the Gulf of Guinea.
Maritime security remains an important area of cooperation for countries in the region, as stability in the Gulf of Guinea is closely linked to trade, shipping and economic activities. Stronger cooperation between Nigeria and São Tomé and PrÃncipe could therefore contribute to broader regional efforts aimed at maintaining security and protecting shared interests.
Nigeria’s participation in the inauguration also reinforces its diplomatic commitment to maintaining strong relations with neighbouring and regional partners. Through such engagements, the Federal Government continues to promote dialogue, cooperation and peaceful democratic governance.
The visit ultimately reflects Nigeria’s broader effort to strengthen bilateral ties with São Tomé and PrÃncipe while supporting regional stability and cooperation across the Gulf of Guinea.
