Frontline pro-Kwara group urges other associations to prioritize state’s future over sentimentThe Kwara for Kwarans Initiative, a frontline pro-Kwara organization, has commended the Aro Meta Development Association for what it described as a “bold and unprecedented” effort to identify and endorse the most credible candidate for the 2027 Kwara State governorship race.
In a statement issued on Monday in Ilorin, the group hailed Aro Meta for “going extra miles” in its screening of aspirants from Kwara South and for resolving to be part of the selection process that will produce the next set of political leaders in the state. The commendation comes hours after Aro Meta formally endorsed Dr Muyideen Salako for Governor and predicted that several other Kwara South aspirants would step down to support him — a projection validated when Senator Lola Ashiru withdrew from the guber race to seek re-election to the Senate.
Kwara for Kwarans Initiative said Aro Meta’s intervention reflects the kind of civic responsibility required to deepen democracy and ensure equitable development. The group noted that for too long, critical leadership decisions had been left to political actors alone, often without structured input from community-based associations that understand the needs of the grassroots.
“Aro Meta is bold enough to do the undone,” the statement read. “They have bestowed upon themselves the responsibility of searching for the most credible among all. This is leadership. This is patriotism. This is how you build a state that works.”
The Initiative, which describes itself as an organization committed to ensuring that “Kwara works for all Kwarans irrespective of religious, ethnic, or social background,” said Aro Meta’s approach aligns with its own vision of an inclusive, merit-driven Kwara.
According to the group, the 2027 elections present a critical opportunity for Kwarans to reset the state’s development trajectory. It therefore called on other development associations, community groups, and professional bodies across the three senatorial districts to abandon parochial interests and engage the political process with the same diligence Aro Meta has shown.
“We urge all other development associations to look beyond sentiments, personal interest, or organizational benefit,” the statement continued. “Kwara State’s future starts now, at this selection process. If we get it right at this stage, we save ourselves four or eight years of complaints and stagnation.”
The group argued that the cost of bad leadership is borne by all citizens, and as such, the process of choosing leaders should not be outsourced entirely to political parties. “Communities must have a say. Development associations must have a say. That is what Aro Meta has demonstrated, and we commend them.”
Aro Meta Development Association, duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, draws its name and strength from the three major ethnic blocs of Kwara South: Igbomina, Ibolo, and Ekiti. At its press conference earlier today at the NUJ Secretariat, Ilorin, the Association said its core mandate is to promote unity and ensure Kwara South speaks with one voice on governance.
The Chairman told journalists that the Association embarked on an extensive screening of all known and rumored aspirants from the district, including visits to their family compounds, to verify capacity, acceptability, and track record. The exercise, he said, led to the endorsement of Dr Muyideen Salako as a “unifier” with strong relationships across all districts, zones, and Local Government Areas.
Kwara for Kwarans Initiative further urged political stakeholders to focus on competence, equity, and capacity rather than zoning agitations not backed by law or consensus. It noted that Aro Meta’s position — that there is no official rotation arrangement in Kwara State — reflects the current political reality, as aspirants have emerged from all three districts, including Kwara Central where the incumbent Governor hails from.
“What matters is who can unify the state, who can distribute resources fairly, and who can work for all Kwarans,” the group said. “Aro Meta has placed merit above sentiment. We ask others to do the same.”
The Initiative also appealed to the APC National body and the Presidency to pay attention to community voices in the nomination process, stressing that candidates who enjoy grassroots legitimacy are better positioned to win elections and govern effectively.
As the 2027 political realignments gather pace, the actions of Aro Meta and the reaction from groups like Kwara for Kwarans Initiative signal a shift toward greater community involvement in leadership recruitment. Whether other associations will follow suit remains to be seen.
For now, Aro Meta’s endorsement of Dr Salako has not only altered the political calculus in Kwara South but also ignited a broader conversation about the role of non-partisan blocs in shaping the state’s future.
“We are ready to work with whoever emerges, as long as he can push for the development of all Kwarans,” Aro Meta had said. Kwara for Kwarans Initiative agrees — but insists that “emergence” must begin with a credible, transparent, and people-driven selection process.
