Social media personalities Andrew and Tristan Tate have been denied bail by a U.S. judge as they continue to fight extradition to the United Kingdom over serious criminal allegations.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis ruled on Wednesday that the brothers should remain in custody while the extradition proceedings continue. The judge said they had failed to demonstrate that they were not flight risks, did not pose a danger to the community, or that special circumstances justified their release.
The brothers were arrested in Miami on July 18 following a request from British authorities seeking their extradition. They are wanted in the UK over allegations including rape, sexual assault and arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation. Both men have denied the allegations and maintained that they are innocent.
Judge Louis reportedly considered the brothers' wealth, international connections and history of travelling between countries when assessing the risk that they could flee the jurisdiction. Their lawyers had argued that their high public profile, along with proposed conditions such as surrendering their passports and electronic monitoring, would prevent them from absconding.
British authorities are seeking to bring the brothers back to the UK to face charges involving alleged offences dating between 2010 and 2017. The current extradition request includes allegations involving four additional victims, alongside earlier charges connected to three alleged victims.
The extradition process is expected to take several months. British authorities have until September 16 to submit the full extradition request to the United States Department of State, after which further legal proceedings will determine whether the brothers can be extradited.
The case comes as the brothers also face separate legal proceedings in Romania. Romanian prosecutors recently indicted Andrew Tate on allegations including trafficking minors, money laundering, having sex with a minor and witness tampering, while Tristan Tate was indicted for complicity. The brothers have rejected the allegations.
