A Forest Guard officer identified as Niyi has sustained gunshot injuries after bandits ambushed a joint security team conducting a cattle recovery operation in Aye Forest, Eruku, Kwara State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, when personnel of the Nigerian Army and Forest Guards reportedly entered the area to recover cattle allegedly rustled from Fulani residents in the community and track the fleeing suspects.
According to information from the security team, the operatives encountered the attackers while attempting to move through the forest area. The situation became particularly difficult as the team approached a river that was reportedly filled with water, making it difficult to cross.
It was at this point, according to the account, that the security personnel came under gunfire from the suspected bandits.
During the exchange, Niyi, a Forest Guard officer, was hit and subsequently taken to a nearby hospital where he is receiving treatment.
Agbemuko Olanrewaju, Chief Security Officer to the Chairman of Ekiti Local Government, confirmed the incident after visiting the injured officer at the hospital.
He said the security team had been ambushed while trying to recover the rustled cattle and apprehend the suspects responsible.
The attack has renewed concerns about the security challenges posed by armed groups operating from forested areas, where thick vegetation, difficult terrain and natural barriers can make security operations more challenging.
Residents in Egbe, Koro, Ogbe and Oke-Ere have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies and recognised local security networks.
Residents are also advised not to confront or approach suspicious individuals themselves, but to leave such situations to trained security personnel.
The incident further highlights the importance of stronger intelligence sharing and coordination between the Nigerian Army, Forest Guards, other local security structures and communities in preventing attacks and protecting lives and property.
