DODOMA, Tanzania Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country’s first First Gentleman, has died while receiving treatment for a heart-related condition in Zanzibar.
Hafidh died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at about 8:00 a.m. at a hospital in Zanzibar, according to Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced the death in a national address. He had been undergoing treatment for the heart condition before his death.
The announcement has plunged Tanzania into mourning, with condolences coming from leaders across the region. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed sympathy to President Samia, her family and the Tanzanian people, while other regional leaders have also conveyed their condolences.
Hafidh was a retired agricultural officer and academic from Zanzibar who largely maintained a private life despite his wife's prominent political career. He married Samia in 1978, and the couple had four children. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in Tanzanian politics.
His place in Tanzania's history was particularly significant. When Samia became president in March 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli, she became Tanzania's first female president, making Hafidh the country's first First Gentleman. Unlike the traditionally prominent public role associated with presidential spouses, he largely stayed away from political affairs and maintained a low public profile.
Following his death, funeral arrangements have begun in Zanzibar, the family's home region. Authorities have yet to provide all details concerning the burial, but the announcement has already triggered an outpouring of sympathy for President Samia and her family.
Hafidh's death marks the loss of a figure who occupied a unique place in Tanzania's political history. Though he largely remained outside the political spotlight, his nearly five-decade marriage to President Samia and his historic role as Tanzania's first First Gentleman made him an important part of the country's modern political story.
