The political landscape of Kabba/Bunu State Constituency in Kogi State is shifting as Hon. Vincent Meseko formally declared his aspiration for the Kogi State House of Assembly, pledging to make youth development and sports the cornerstone of his legislative agenda.
Meseko, a philanthropist, sports director, ex-professional footballer, and multiple business owner, is positioning himself as a bridge between the streets and the state assembly. His campaign message is simple: focus and determination can change any story, and Kabba/Bunu II youths deserve a representative who has lived that proof.
From the Street to Professional Football
Speaking during a consultative meeting with youth and community stakeholders in Kabba over the weekend, Meseko recounted his journey from humble beginnings to professional football, crediting discipline, mentorship, and opportunity for his rise.
“My story started on the same streets many of our young people are walking today,” he said. “It was focus and determination that took me from those streets to professional football in Europe and beyond. If I could do it, thousands of Kabba/Bunu youths can do even more. They only need a system that sees them.”
Meseko noted that his experience as an ex-professional and now sports director has shown him firsthand how structured sports can reduce crime, create jobs, and give young people global exposure. He said the constituency has raw talent in football, athletics, and combat sports, but lacks facilities, coaching pipelines, and sponsorship frameworks.
A Legislative Agenda for Sports and Young Minds
Hon Meseko told Veritas News Hub that his plan is to “look inwards” by developing sports at the grassroots and building a support system for young minds to achieve greatness.
His proposed priorities include:
1. Constituency Sports Development Bill– To mandate annual grants for school sports, community tournaments, and maintenance of playing fields across Kabba/Bunu.
2. Youth Enterprise & Skills Desk – A liaison office that connects young people to state and private-sector training, startup grants, and sports scholarships.
3. Talent-to-Market Pipeline – Partnering with academies, clubs, and foreign scouts to ensure standout athletes from Kabba/Bunu get trials and professional contracts.
4. Women & Girls in Sports – Dedicated funding for female teams and coaches to close the participation gap.
“As a businessman, I know the power of investment. As a philanthropist, I know the joy of impact. As your lawmaker, I will combine both to make Kabba/Bunu a hub for talent,” Meseko said.
Supporters at the meeting described Meseko as “home-based and reachable,” noting that his businesses and philanthropic projects have remained in the constituency despite his international career. Community leader Mrs. Rachael Owoniyi said the aspirant had quietly sponsored medical outreaches and paid school fees for indigent students over the last five years.
“He doesn’t wait for election season to show up,” she said. “That’s the kind of assembly member we need, someone who is there come rain come sunshine.”
With the Kogi State House of Assembly primaries approaching, Meseko’s team said consultations will intensify across all wards in Kabba/Bunu II. The campaign will host a “Youth & Sports Townhall” next week to harvest ideas directly from players, coaches, and youth leaders.
Political observers say Meseko’s entry adds a fresh dynamic to the race, given his blend of sports pedigree, business experience, and philanthropy. For many young constituents, his “street to stardom” story is already a campaign poster.
“I am not here to make promises,” Meseko concluded. “I am here to replicate a process that worked for me, so it can work for thousands of our sons and daughters. Kabba/Bunu deserves a voice that inspires and delivers.”
