Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has waded deeper into the political contest ahead of the Osun State governorship election, describing supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state as “enemies of progress.”
Davido made the remark on Monday, August 10, 2026, through his official X account, as political campaigns intensify ahead of Saturday’s governorship poll.
“Anybody supporting APC in Osun state is an enemy of progress! Lessons will be learnt this weekend,” the singer wrote.
The statement has attracted significant attention because of Davido’s close relationship with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking another term in office. The singer has consistently shown support for his uncle during the ongoing political contest.
The August 15 election has emerged as a closely watched contest, with the incumbent facing a strong challenge from the APC’s candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is also among the leading contenders in the race.
Davido’s latest statement has also intensified an ongoing social-media exchange between the singer and former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad.
Ahmad criticised Davido’s comment, describing it as “cheap blackmail” and questioning the singer’s intervention in the political contest.
The exchange between the two has been developing for several days, with both men trading remarks on social media over the forthcoming Osun election and the political fortunes of Governor Adeleke.
Davido’s latest intervention further highlights the increasingly prominent role celebrities are playing in Nigeria’s political conversations, particularly on social media, where entertainers with large followings can reach millions of potential voters.
The Osun election is expected to be one of the more closely followed governorship contests of 2026. With just days remaining before voters head to the polls, the major political camps have intensified their campaigns and mobilisation efforts across the state.
The contest has also attracted support from prominent political figures. Former Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and former deputy governor Iyiola Omisore have backed APC candidate Oyebamiji, adding another dimension to the increasingly competitive race.
Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke and other major candidates have continued their final campaign activities as parties seek to consolidate their support ahead of election day.
As the August 15 poll approaches, Davido’s comments are likely to remain part of the wider political conversation, particularly among young voters and his large social-media following.
Ultimately, however, the decision will rest with registered voters across Osun State, who will determine whether the incumbent retains power or the APC succeeds in taking control of the state.
The election is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
